Next, look at the paint itself. Walk the length of the car in good, even daylight. Watch for:

- Overspray on trim, rubber seals, or glass, which suggests a hurried repaint.
- Fine, spider-web scratches that are routine, versus dull, matte patches that indicate a repaint without proper clear coat.
- Small bubbles or blisters along the lower edges of doors, rocker panels, and around wheel wells. These are early signs of rust working from the inside out.
Discoloration or bubbling in these areas is worth noting. What looks like a cosmetic flaw may mean the metal has weakened. Only a trained technician can confirm whether rust has compromised structural strength, so if you spot any suspicious areas, treat them as a reason to seek professional advice before you commit to a test drive. Under the Hood: Fluid Levels and Belts You Can Check Safely
With the engine off and fully cooled, you can gather useful information without removing any parts. Start with the oil dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and pull it again. Look at where the oil sits between the low and full marks. Low oil might just mean it is due for a service, but it also warrants a closer look at whether the car leaks or burns oil. Note the color and texture: clean oil is amber and fairly translucent. Dark, gritty, or milky oil deserves caution. Milky oil can indicate coolant mixing with oil, which is a serious concern.
Next, check the coolant reservoir, a translucent plastic tank with level markings. The level should sit near the “full” or “max” line when the engine is cold. Coolant that looks rusty or has floating debris suggests neglect. Do not remove the radiator cap on a warm engine—pressure can cause severe burns.
Finally, inspect the visible drive belts along the front of the engine. Look for cracks, frayed edges, or a shiny glazed surface. Minor surface crazing is common with age, but significant cracking or missing chunks means replacement is due soon.

- Top up fluids only if you have the correct type on hand; otherwise, just note the level.

Many tires also have built-in wear indicators—small raised bars that appear level with the tread when it is time for replacement.
Look for uneven wear across the tire surface. Smooth on both edges but deep in the middle often signals over-inflation, while worn outer edges with a full center suggest under-inflation or a weak suspension. Feathering or a saw-tooth pattern usually points to an alignment issue. These are not deal-breakers on their own, but they are worth noting for negotiation or further inspection.
Next, glance at the wheel rims. Scrapes, dents, or bent edges can indicate a hard curb hit that might have damaged the wheel bearing or steering components. If the wheels have open spokes or enough gap, take a flashlight and look at the brake rotors. A smooth, slightly shiny surface with a light rust film is common; deep grooves, heavy rust pitting, or a blue-tinted color from overheating are reasons for caution. On rear drum brakes, look for dampness or dark streaks that might suggest a leaking wheel cylinder.
Finally, remember that you cannot diagnose brakes by sight alone. Do not ignore any grinding, pulsing, or pulling sensations during the drive. These are signals that the braking system needs professional attention before any purchase decision is sound.
The Cabin and Basic Controls: What a Seller Should Allow
Before you turn the key, spend time inside the car with the engine off. This is the quietest moment to look for clues about how the previous owner treated the vehicle. Start with the driver’s seat. Look for deep creases, frayed edges, or a compressed cushion that suggests many hours of use. Check the carpet on the driver’s side and under the pedals for unusual wear, staining, or a worn-through patch on the heel area. Heavy wear here can point to high mileage or aggressive driving, even if the odometer says otherwise.
Take a close look at the pedals themselves. A rubber surface that is smooth and worn down, or a metal pedal that shows a shiny spot, generally indicates frequent use. Then, move through the cabin methodically. Operate the windows, door locks, and both side mirrors. Roll each window up and down fully to see if it moves smoothly and quietly. Test the locks from the driver’s master switch, not just on each door. Check the mirrors through their full range of adjustment.
A reasonable seller should allow you to operate these non-moving controls. This is a standard part of a pre-purchase inspection. You do not need to remove panels, unscrew trim, or pull up carpet. If you see a suspicious stain or a damp spot under a seat, do not dig at it. Simply note the area and ask the seller about it. Moisture stains on the headliner, a musty smell, or rust on seat rails can be signs of water intrusion. Likewise, a driver’s seat that feels loose or tilts unexpectedly is worth mentioning. Stop your inspection at the point where you would need a tool; everything beyond that is for a qualified mechanic to assess later.
