Then watch the seasons. A spot that is sunny in early spring may be in full shade by midsummer once a deciduous tree leafs out. Conversely, an area under a large maple gets brighter after the leaves drop. Plan for the hardest season first: if the bed looks bare in July but bright in October, choose plants that tolerate the shade of summer and accept the autumn sun as a bonus. Mark the light pattern on a simple sketch and revisit it in three months. That record matters more than any label on a plant tag.

Soil Is the Quiet Foundation

Before you replant a single bed under a mature tree, it helps to consider what is happening below the surface. Shade changes more than just light levels.
